Pupils at Smithills School in Bolton have had lessons cancelled after travellers set up camp in the school field.

A schoolteacher who is a BNP activist has been cleared of racial intolerance. Adam Walker had described some immigrants as ‘savage animals’ and ‘filth’ posting his opinions on an internet forum using a school computer from Houghton Kepier Sports College, Co Durham. Mr Walker had resigned from his job in 2007. The General Teaching Council said his views were troubling but were not ‘suggestive of intolerance’. WFTS comments – we believe that the General Teaching Council should check this one again!

Crime levels have risen in Greater Manchester in line with the arrival of warmer weather. Figures from GMP show that the warm weekend weather brought with it an increase in crime, with a total of 16,000 calls made, an increase of 20% from the previous weekend.

A Gorton teenager has landed a £30,000 scholarship at a top ballet school. Josh Moss, a pupil at Wright Robinson College, Gorton, has been training for this opportunity for 10 years. Josh said: ‘I’m over the moon. I’ve just always wanted to dance – I’m still known as ‘Billy Elliot’ in my family. I still go to dance lessons three times a week and it’s good for taking my mind off my GCSE’s.’

Snooker legend Alex Higgins has been receiving support from old friends who got together to raise money for the fallen star. Higgins, aka the ‘Hurricane’, has been fighting a battle with alcoholism, and is now losing in a battle against throat cancer that has spread to his whole body. This week his old mates who hung with him at nightspots around Greater Manchester got together for dinner to raise money. Higgins was guest of honour with snooker legends Jimmy White, John Virgo and Tony Knowles among other soap and TV stars.

A top referee from amateur football has been suspended from officiating at matches following his arrest for sexual assault. Two women have claimed Charles Ahme, 44, assaulted them during treatment at his clinic in Levenshulme. Mr Ahme referee’s in the Manchester’s League and the Manchester Amateur Sunday League. A spokesman from Manchester FA said: “The individual has been suspended from officiating football from under-18’s down.”
