Moss Side and Hulme

In 1994, Benji Stanley was shot dead on the streets. YCSCA responded to a national debate on youth gang culture and violence, by meeting with the young people of the Procter Youth Centre, whose dream was to improve a run down kick about area next to their Youth Club.

In Partnership with Hulme Regeneration, YCSCA created a project, raising funding from both public and private sectors to build an outdoor sports arena, catering for 37 different sporting activities. Additional funding was then attracted which helped provide additional equipment, improving the choice of activities available. Over 100 Community Sports Leaders were trained - this provided the volunteers to work with the community.

This is the first truly multi-agency project, that demonstrated the role that sports, art and culture could play in improving not only the social condition for young people and the wider community, but, developed the confidence and trust between the many local public, private sector and voluntary agencies.

The impact and success of this project helped establish a platform and a model that has seen over £5m invested over the past 10 years. This social impact model has since been replicated by other local authorities and youth related organizations in neightbourhoods throughout the world, demonstrating the role that sports and the arts play as a social tool impacting on the areas of health, education, social order and the environment
