Project Name: Sports, Health, Inclusion Apprenticeship Scheme - Bolton

Location: Bolton

The Challenge

The management delivery and development of a borough wide sport and physical activity service that aims to encourage more people to be more active more often with a view to improve health, well-being and quality of life of the people who live and work in Bolton.

The Approach

The Service is currently leading the local delivery of a wide range of training programs within the sport and physical activity field.

Working with the Connexions Service and colleagues within Integrated ChildrenÕs Services, the apprenticeship scheme is aimed at supporting the early identification of NEETS (not in education, employment or training at the age of 16). By providing vocational training with year 11, the program aims to reduce to local NEETS statistics by increasing the genuine employment prospects of the young people involved.

The Benefits

Throughout the year the apprentices worked towards and completed a variety of qualifications through Bury college apprenticeships.

Additional qualifications have also been gained through the SH&I service.

The apprentices have also gained vast amounts of varied work and industry experience through working within our sports development team. Community sports development team, Moving Up Through Leisure project, Active Health team and Farnworth Inclusion Teams.

On completion of the scheme, progression / exit routes have been identified for these young people with the assistance of the Connexions service.

By also involving key partners such as serco leisure and other private sector providers the scheme will be able to identify employment gaps within the local sport and leisure industry.
